From Rome to Athens: My First Princess Cruise Experience

Sunrises, ship life, and a wedding at sea

I boarded the Sun Princess not entirely sure what to expect — but I left Athens completely converted to cruise life. Maybe it was the fact that this was a brand-new ship, with its sleek design and clever layout. Or maybe cruise ships are just magic — from the moment you walk on board, something shifts.

  • The attention to detail stood out from the start. Luggage glided through security, the boarding process was seamless, and the welcome felt genuinely warm. Even the carpets were beautiful (yes, really). The lifts were genius — you pressed your deck and it told you exactly which one to wait for. Small touches, but memorable.

  • We sailed from Rome, stopping in Naples, Chania, Istanbul, Mykonos, and finally Athens. Every stop brought something different, but Naples took us by surprise. We stumbled upon a WWII tunnel used as a bomb shelter — filled with vintage cars, Nazi artifacts, and raw history. Unadvertised, unexpected, and totally unforgettable.

  • We had two days at sea, and both were pure bliss. One was unforgettable for a special reason — my friend’s wedding, held right on board and officiated by the ship’s Captain. She was radiant, surrounded by guests who had flown in from around the world. Most of us hadn’t met before, but by the end of the cruise, the bar became our nightly meeting point — easygoing, familiar, and full of warmth.

As for the food? Let’s just say Princess knows how to do pizza. We mostly stuck to the included restaurants, each one reliably delicious. One evening, we scored a table at the back of the ship, watching the sun sink into the horizon while the wake stretched behind us. It was a quiet, golden moment — and exactly why I fell in love with cruise life.

  • We chose an interior cabin, and honestly? It was perfect. Dark, cosy, and surprisingly spacious. The kind of sleep you can only dream of after an early flight — and waking up somewhere new? That’s the real joy of cruising.

Princess Cruises also has a smart ‘Medallion’ system that lets you track people in your party via the app. One night, I woke to find my partner gone — and easily found him in the theatre area. Even in the quiet hours, the ship felt secure and peaceful.

  • What won me over was the rhythm of it all. No airport sprints, no repacking stress — just calm days, good food, deep sleep, and the joy of opening the curtains to a brand-new country. Every moment felt easy, intentional, and never wasted. It wasn’t just a holiday; it was travel done well.
